A Texas woman has been arrested after police say she threw boiling water on two young children during a violent outburst, leaving both victims with serious burn injuries.
According to court records, 33-year-old Stacy L. Gilbert was taken into custody this week and charged with two counts of injury to a child — one for recklessly causing bodily injury and another for intentionally causing bodily injury.
Officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to a 911 call about an injured juvenile around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 3800 block of Maverick Creek, local reports said.
When first responders arrived, they found a 2-year-old and a 13-year-old suffering from burn injuries across their bodies. Emergency medical crews rushed both children to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Following a preliminary investigation, police alleged that Gilbert became angry with the boys for reasons that remain unclear. Investigators say that while the children were inside their bedroom, Gilbert entered the room and threw boiling water on them.
Authorities have not publicly clarified the exact relationship between Gilbert and the two victims.
Gilbert was arrested early Tuesday morning, and police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. Additional charges could be filed as detectives continue to gather evidence.
Neighbors in the area told KSAT that while the incident was horrifying, it was not entirely unexpected. Several residents said police had been called to the home multiple times in the past. One neighbor recalled seeing the children outside barefoot near broken glass.
“Your job is to care for these children, and that is treacherous to do something like that,” one neighbor said.
Another added, “They’re kids. There should be no reason.”
Gilbert is currently being held at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on a $30,000 bond. Court records show she is prohibited from possessing firearms if released and is scheduled to return to court for a pre-indictment hearing on April 20.
Records also show Gilbert has a prior criminal history, including charges in 2020 for abandoning a child, child endangerment, and deadly conduct. In 2021, she was charged with assault causing bodily injury and making terroristic threats.
Police continue to investigate the case as the children recover from their injuries.
