A routine stop at a Phoenix gas station turned deadly last week when a man was shot and killed while waiting in line, leaving his family and loved ones reeling from what they described as a senseless act of violence.

According to a statement from the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded around 7:45 a.m. on Jan. 16 to reports of a shooting near a gas station in the 4400 block of East Oak Street. When they arrived, they found 52-year-old Danny Lyn Kaster suffering from gunshot wounds.

Family members said Kaster had been waiting to use the restroom at the gas station when a 25-year-old man, identified as Deondre Franklin, allegedly tried to cut the line. Kaster attempted to step in, but Franklin allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him at least once.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded and rushed Kaster to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Homicide detectives were called to the scene to begin an investigation.

Franklin was arrested the following day, Jan. 17, in connection with the shooting. Court records viewed by PEOPLE show he was booked on one count of second-degree murder.

Kaster’s sister, Delca Kaster, told Fox 13 that the family is still struggling to process what happened.

“We’re all still honestly in shock,” she said. “He left for work on Friday. Now he’s never coming home.”

Delca described the shooting as completely unprovoked, saying her brother wasn’t aggressive or looking for trouble. “This was a completely senseless act of violence,” she said. “My brother was doing nothing wrong. He was just a man starting out his work day.”

She added that Danny was far more than the tragedy that ended his life. “He was a son, a brother, a loved one who mattered deeply to his family and friends,” she said. “He had a life — relationships, his dog Max, his prized possession truck, and a future that was stolen in an instant.”

The siblings had been close since childhood, with Delca saying Danny was the kind of person who would give anyone the shirt off his back. Another relative, Aidan, remembered him as a funny, kind-hearted man who had a deep love for animals.

“I’m really sorry that he had to go through this and that he was probably scared,” another family member, Shelby, told Fox 13. “I really just love him.”

In the wake of the killing, a GoFundMe page was created to help the family cover funeral expenses. The page describes Kaster as a beloved brother, son, uncle, and friend whose sudden death has left a painful void in the lives of those who knew him.

“As the family tries to process this heartbreaking loss,” the fundraiser reads, “they are also faced with unexpected expenses that no one should have to bear alone.”
