A Minnesota man has pleaded guilty in a chilling double murder that has stunned his family and shaken the community — the killing and dismemberment of his pregnant sister and her unborn child.
Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced last week that Jack Joseph Ball admitted to killing his sister, Bethany Ann Israel, in late May 2024. Ball, who was 24 at the time, pleaded guilty to premeditated first-degree murder and premeditated first-degree murder of an unborn child — charges that carry the possibility of life in prison under Minnesota law.
The horrific case came to light on the night of May 23, 2024, after family members contacted police when Israel failed to return home from a dinner she had planned with her brother. Officers responding to the residence reportedly encountered what authorities later described as two graphic crime scenes.
Inside the home, investigators allegedly found bloody knives and dismembered body parts belonging to Israel. According to police, a family member reported seeing Ball flee the scene. Officers later located him at another site, bloodied and suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted neck wound. Additional remains of his sister were reportedly found nearby.
Court documents reviewed by PEOPLE at the time of Ball’s arrest revealed that investigators also discovered journals allegedly written by Ball. In those writings, he reportedly expressed a desire to kill his sister because he believed she was “no longer innocent.”
A medical examiner later determined that Israel was between 17 and 18 weeks pregnant at the time she and her unborn child were killed.
County Attorney Keena previously called the case “deeply disturbing and horrific,” adding that words could not fully capture what law enforcement encountered during the investigation.
Israel’s family remembered her in a GoFundMe tribute as a “cherished wife, daughter, sister, and expectant mother.” They also noted that she was a beloved figure in the volleyball community.
“Bethany’s radiant spirit and unwavering kindness touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her,” the family wrote. “Her love for life, her family, and the friendships she nurtured are the legacies she leaves behind. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.”
Despite Ball’s guilty plea, the legal proceedings are not yet complete. Prosecutors confirmed last week that Ball has asserted a defense of mental illness and is scheduled to stand trial in late May 2026, when the state will challenge that claim.
“Minnesota law states that a person is not criminally responsible if a mental illness made the person unable to understand what they were doing or know that it was wrong at the time the offense was committed,” Keena explained.
If convicted following that proceeding, Ball faces a mandatory life sentence. He remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail.
