A 31-year-old Arizona man who prosecutors say became dangerously fixated on a woman he supervised at a pizza shop has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering a coworker he believed was a romantic rival.
A Maricopa County judge ordered Tyler Ross McGuire to spend the rest of his natural life behind bars for the 2023 killing of Deazo Seghi in Mesa. The sentence followed a jury’s verdict earlier this month finding McGuire guilty of first-degree murder.
“This defendant carried out a planned and unprovoked killing, leaving a family to endure an unimaginable loss,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement. “This sentence delivers justice for the victim and affirms that this level of violence will be met with the strongest consequences under the law.”
According to prosecutors, McGuire was a manager at a local pizza shop where both Seghi and a female employee worked. Authorities said McGuire developed an unhealthy fixation on the woman he supervised and later told her he had a crush on her. She made it clear she was not interested.
That same month, McGuire allegedly confronted Seghi, believing the young man was also pursuing a relationship with the woman.
Prosecutors said McGuire’s resentment only grew over the following year. His anger escalated to the point that he purchased a handgun and searched for Seghi’s home address, actions authorities say showed clear premeditation.
About a year after the initial confrontation, Seghi was shot and killed outside his home.
On Dec. 11, 2023, Seghi was found slumped inside his vehicle in front of an apartment complex near North Stapley Road and East Brown Road in Mesa. Witnesses told investigators that McGuire approached the car and fired multiple shots into Seghi’s chest before fleeing.
McGuire was quickly identified as a suspect and arrested. Police said they recovered a cellphone and a black handgun from him at the time of his arrest. Ballistics testing later confirmed the bullets matched the shell casings found at the murder scene.
Days later, McGuire’s mother contacted authorities after discovering a diary belonging to her son. Prosecutors said the journal laid out his plan to kill Seghi and detailed his motives.
One entry read, “I decided a while ago I needed to kill someone. This person hurt me.”
Another entry revealed his fixation on the woman, stating, “If I had my way, I’d be with her. Although that opportunity was stolen from me.”
Prosecutors said the diary eliminated any doubt that the killing was deliberate and planned.
