A Texas woman who told police she had “nothing to hide” is now facing a first-degree murder charge after investigators say she brutally attacked her boyfriend with a hammer, left him unconscious at a church, and then tried to erase the evidence.
Abigail Molina, 32, was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of 64-year-old Gilbert Parker. Court records show Molina is charged with first-degree murder, theft, and tampering with physical evidence.
Parker was discovered on January 18 at Old Path Baptist Church in China Grove, just east of San Antonio. According to an arrest affidavit, he was found unconscious, partially naked, and covered in what appeared to be dried blood inside a tool shed that had been converted into living quarters.
Blood was reportedly found throughout the shed, prompting witnesses to call 911 and China Grove police. Parker was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to another facility. Though he drifted in and out of consciousness, investigators say he was never able to explain what happened.
The next day, Molina contacted police herself, claiming she had “nothing to hide” and insisting the incident was self-defense stemming from an altercation that led to Parker’s hospitalization. Authorities have not said whether they had already been searching for her at that point.
Parker died on January 20. An autopsy revealed multiple head lacerations, including one blow severe enough to fracture his skull and cause internal brain bleeding.
As detectives dug deeper, they learned Parker’s cellphone, wallet, and 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup truck were missing. Investigators also alleged that members of the church entered the shed after the attack and cleaned up blood and other items, including possible drug evidence.
Police were also told that Parker and Molina had been dating, but that the relationship appeared unbalanced. According to a witness cited in court documents, Parker was more emotionally invested and possessive, and the couple had argued in the past.
On the day Parker died, his pickup truck was spotted near the home of one of Molina’s close friends. Investigators say Molina attempted to spray-paint and sand the vehicle, washed blood stains off at a car wash, and later sold the truck in Houston for just $300.
When questioned, Molina allegedly gave vague and scattered answers about her relationship with Parker. She told investigators the last time she saw him was January 13 at a local smoke shop, where the two argued, but she refused to provide details.
The case took a dramatic turn on February 1, when a caller contacted homicide detectives and claimed their cousin had previously dated Molina. The caller said the argument at the smoke shop escalated into Molina killing Parker. A second tip came in the following day, directing police to a stormwater drainage culvert where the murder weapon had supposedly been dumped.
Investigators searched the area and recovered a construction hammer missing its claw. According to the affidavit, the damage to Parker’s skull was consistent with that type of weapon.
Police also interviewed one of Molina’s ex-boyfriends, who said she called him on January 15 in tears, asking for help. He told investigators that Molina claimed Parker had hit her, she “blacked out,” and then struck him repeatedly with the hammer.
Molina was taken into custody and booked into jail as the investigation continues.
