A routine traffic stop in Missouri turned into a deadly manhunt Monday after a suspect allegedly opened fire on deputies — killing two and injuring two others before being shot dead in the woods.
Authorities say 45-year-old Richard Bird first exchanged gunfire with law enforcement during a traffic stop on State Highway 160. During that initial confrontation, one deputy was killed.
Bird then fled the scene, abandoning the pickup truck he had been driving. The Missouri State Highway Patrol quickly issued a Blue Alert and released information about the suspect and his vehicle as officers from multiple agencies began searching the area.
The situation escalated hours later when a Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter detected a heat source in a wooded area nearby. That heat signature was identified as Bird, according to Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole.
“As deputies closed in, the suspect immediately opened fire,” Cole told reporters during a press conference. “Three deputies were shot during that time.”
One deputy from Christian County was killed in the second exchange of gunfire. Two other deputies — one from Christian County and one from Webster County — were wounded. Officials said their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities say Bird continued firing at officers until law enforcement returned fire, fatally shooting him at the scene.
