A shocking and heartbreaking case out of Colorado has left a community stunned after authorities say an 11-year-old boy is suspected of killing his 5-year-old brother inside their family home.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Tuesday evening after deputies responded to a home in Centennial, a suburb south of Denver, around 5:30 p.m. on March 10. When authorities arrived, they discovered the young child dead inside the residence.
Hours later, investigators revealed that the victim’s older brother, just 11 years old, had been taken into custody in connection with the death.
Officials say the case is now being investigated as a homicide. However, the exact cause of death has not yet been released as the investigation continues.
The 11-year-old suspect has not been publicly identified due to his age. Authorities say he is currently being held at the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center and is facing a charge of first-degree murder.
Investigators have not shared additional details about what may have led to the tragedy, describing the case as an open and active investigation.
Because both the victim and the suspect are minors, law enforcement officials say they will be releasing only limited information as the case moves forward.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown expressed sympathy for the grieving family and the wider community.
“Our hearts go out to the family of these two young boys and to everyone in our community who is grieving this loss,” Brown said in a statement.
He added that tragedies like this often ripple far beyond the family involved.
“We know situations like this impact not only the family but also classmates, teachers and neighbors throughout the community,” Brown said. “We appreciate the public’s patience as investigators continue working to gather the facts and pursue justice.”
Officials with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office say formal charges are expected to be filed within the coming week. At this time, the case is being handled in juvenile court, and prosecutors have not indicated whether they plan to seek adult charges.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine exactly what happened inside the home that led to the devastating death of the young child.
