A quiet Massachusetts town is in shock after a mother was accused of killing her two young children following a disturbing discovery inside their home.

Authorities say 48-year-old Janette MacAusland of Wellesley is now facing two counts of murder in the deaths of her children, ages 6 and 7. The charges were announced on Saturday, April 25, after investigators obtained an arrest warrant.

The case began with a welfare check at the family’s home on Edgemoor Avenue. When officers arrived, they made a heartbreaking discovery—both children were found dead inside the residence.

The victims have since been identified as Ella and Kai MacAusland.

According to someone who previously cared for the children, the news has been almost impossible to process.

Cale Darrah, who worked as a babysitter for the family for about a year, described Ella as “an absolute angel” with a sweet and outgoing personality. She said both children always appeared happy and healthy.

“Never did I enter the house and feel like there was anything that was extremely off,” she said. “It doesn’t really feel real at all… especially in a town like Wellesley where nothing like this ever happens.”

MacAusland, who is listed as an acupuncturist with New England Integrated Health, has also reportedly worked at Mass General Hospital.

Following the discovery, the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed the children were students in the Wellesley Public School system. Counselors are being made available to students and staff as the community struggles to cope with the tragedy.

MacAusland is currently being held in Vermont and is expected to appear in Bennington County Superior Court on a fugitive from justice charge. Authorities in Massachusetts are working with Vermont State Police to have her transported back to face the murder charges.
