A Florida daycare worker is behind bars after police say surveillance video captured horrifying abuse against an infant so severe the little girl allegedly suffered a skull fracture, brain bleeding, seizures, and potentially lifelong injuries.
Alyssa Thompson, 30, has been charged with aggravated child abuse following a disturbing investigation at Wee Care Too daycare center in Lake City.
According to the Lake City Police Department, investigators began looking into the case on April 20 after the infant reportedly suffered seizures, lethargy, and a fever.
Authorities said the child was initially taken to a hospital before being transferred to a pediatric care center in Gainesville after her condition worsened.
The investigation took a horrifying turn when the daycare director reportedly reviewed surveillance footage and alerted police to what officers described as “inappropriate behavior” involving Thompson.
Police say the videos showed multiple violent incidents occurring on different days throughout April.
According to the arrest report, one video allegedly showed Thompson forcefully tossing the infant into a bouncy chair hard enough for the baby’s head to strike a metal bar.
Investigators said the child’s head visibly jerked forward from the impact.
Roughly 20 minutes later, police claim Thompson aggressively yanked the baby out of a crib and dropped her onto a changing table from a significant height.
Authorities said the infant’s head allegedly bounced off the table multiple times.
The footage allegedly became even more disturbing as the child appeared increasingly limp and unresponsive throughout the day.
Police say Thompson was later seen lifting the baby and slamming her head into the wooden rail of the changing table.
Investigators also claim the daycare worker repeatedly tossed the infant into a foam seat, violently shook the seat, struck the child’s legs, and even kicked the seat with her foot while feeding another child.
At one point, authorities say the baby appeared completely motionless.
Police said Thompson allegedly continued trying to provoke a reaction from the infant by shaking and hitting the chair.
Doctors later discovered the child had suffered devastating injuries, including a skull fracture, detached retinas, bleeding behind the eyes, and a brain bleed.
According to investigators, doctors also warned there is a strong possibility the infant could suffer lifelong medical complications because of the abuse.
Medical experts reportedly told police the injuries were too extensive to have been caused by a single incident, leading investigators to uncover additional alleged abuse from earlier dates, including April 13.
Authorities say surveillance footage from that day allegedly showed Thompson repeatedly snatching, tossing, spinning, and slamming the infant during diaper changes and other care activities.
Police described the alleged abuse as repeated, violent, and escalating over time.
Thompson is currently being held at the Columbia County Jail without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
