A former Florida elementary school teacher has been arrested after authorities say she was caught on video allegedly getting into a physical altercation with a 6-year-old student inside a classroom.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Ashley Morris was taken into custody after a school resource deputy reviewed surveillance footage from inside Madison County Central School.
Investigators say the video allegedly showed a physical interaction between Morris and the young child during class.
Authorities have not publicly released details about what led up to the incident or exactly what was captured on the footage.
Morris has since been charged with child abuse without great bodily harm, according to online jail records.
She was arrested on May 5 and released from custody the following day after posting a $2,000 bond.
Following the arrest, the school district released a statement saying the safety of students remains its top priority.
“The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priorities,” the district said in part.
Superintendent Karen Pickles also stated that officials are taking the allegations “with the utmost seriousness.”
School officials said Morris was immediately placed on administrative leave once the allegations surfaced.
The district also confirmed she is banned from entering school property or contacting students and staff members while both the criminal investigation and internal review remain ongoing.
Counselors have reportedly been made available to students, staff, and families affected by the incident.
School officials also notified parents of children who may have witnessed the alleged altercation.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is still active and additional details have not yet been released because the case involves a minor.
It is currently unclear whether Morris has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
