A horrifying mystery on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura has taken a disturbing turn after authorities discovered the dismembered body of a missing tourist at a landfill site — and arrested her own son in connection with the case.
According to multiple reports, the remains of 56-year-old Katty Oosterlinck were found Friday at the Zurita waste treatment complex near Puerto del Rosario.
The Belgian tourist had been missing for several days after family and friends reportedly lost contact with her on May 4.
Authorities launched a desperate search effort to find Oosterlinck, combing through multiple areas on the island before investigators focused attention on the landfill site.
Officials eventually discovered her remains inside the environmental complex after days of searching.
The shocking discovery stunned both locals and tourists on the popular vacation island.
Spanish authorities have not yet publicly revealed exactly how Oosterlinck died or what led investigators to the landfill.
However, reports say officers from the Judicial Police unit of the Spanish Civil Guard later arrested Oosterlinck’s 22-year-old son on suspicion of murder.
Investigators have not yet released details about a possible motive.
Oosterlinck’s remains were removed from the site and transferred to forensic specialists for an autopsy, which is expected to help determine the exact cause of death.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue piecing together what happened in the days leading up to the tourist’s disappearance.
The gruesome case has sparked major attention across both Spain and Belgium as loved ones mourn the tragic death.
