A terrifying scene unfolded in northern Italy after a car suddenly plowed into a crowd of pedestrians, leaving eight people injured — including one woman who later had both of her legs amputated after the horrific crash.
The shocking incident happened Saturday in the popular Italian city of Modena, according to authorities.
Officials say the driver barreled into pedestrians along a busy street before chaos erupted across the area.
Modena Mayor Massimo Mezzetti confirmed that eight people were hurt in the crash, with four victims suffering serious injuries.
One woman was reportedly pinned against a storefront window during the violent impact and later underwent the amputation of both legs because of the catastrophic injuries she suffered.
Authorities identified the suspect as a 31-year-old man born in Italy.
According to witnesses, the man was allegedly holding a knife after the crash, though officials said no stabbings took place.
The suspect reportedly attempted to flee the scene after mowing down the pedestrians, but bystanders and police officers managed to stop him before he could escape.
He has since been detained and is now being questioned by investigators.
Authorities are still trying to determine whether the crash was intentional or if the driver may have been under the influence at the time.
“Whatever the nature, it is a very serious act,” Mayor Mezzetti said after the incident. “If it were an attack, it would be even more serious.”
Photos from the scene showed emergency responders surrounding the damaged vehicle while investigators blocked off parts of the street.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later released a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and praising the civilians who stepped in to stop the suspect.
“I express my closeness to the injured people and their families,” Meloni wrote. “I also extend my thanks to the citizens who courageously intervened to stop the perpetrator and to law enforcement for their response.”
She added that she had personally spoken with the mayor and was closely monitoring developments in the investigation.
“I trust that the person responsible will be fully held accountable for his actions,” she said.
Police have not yet announced possible charges as the investigation remains ongoing.

Lived in Italy many years ago. The Italians couldn’t understand why America had such problems with its “diversity” and issues with people of color.
AND THEN ITALY OPENED ITS BORDERS TO MUSLIMS AND GOT INVADED BY NORTHERN AFRICANS!!
By the time we left Italy, they were no longer asking that question!!!
Having to learn your lesson the hard way must be a global thing!!!!
Wonder if he is one of those Muslims who have been imported into Europe over the last century.
