An Amazon delivery driver is being credited with helping save a woman’s life after he allegedly walked up to a Minnesota home and discovered a horrifying attack unfolding inside.
Police in Wyoming, Minnesota, responded to a home on Monday, May 11, after receiving a 911 call about an assault with a weapon in progress, according to charging documents.
The caller told police he had been delivering a package around 1 p.m. when he heard yelling coming from inside the home.
When he went to check what was happening, he reportedly found a woman covered in blood and a man holding a hammer.
The delivery driver then told the man to drop the hammer and called 911.
Local outlets KARE11, KSTP, and Fox 9 identified the 911 caller as an Amazon delivery driver.
When officers arrived, they found the woman lying on the living room floor with a large pool of blood underneath her, according to charging documents. Police said she had two bloody indentations on her head that were consistent with being struck by a hammer multiple times.
The woman told officers she had kicked the man in the groin to get him off her during the alleged attack.
Police identified the suspect as 73-year-old James Alan Johnson. Local reports said he was married to the woman found bleeding inside the home.
Johnson was taken into custody.
According to the criminal complaint, Johnson allegedly told investigators he had been planning to kill the woman for several days. He also allegedly said he did it because he was facing financial problems and did not want her to live on significantly reduced Social Security benefits.
Johnson has been charged with first-degree premeditated attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, according to police.
He is currently being held at the Chisago County Jail, according to KSTP.
The case has left many stunned, but it may have ended even worse if the delivery driver had not heard the screams, checked on the home, and made the 911 call.
