A Nevada woman will spend decades behind bars after admitting she killed three of her roommates in a 2017 Las Vegas shooting.
Christine Sanchez, 56, was sentenced on Thursday, June 4, to 25 to 70 years in prison after pleading guilty in April to three counts of murder with a deadly weapon.
The victims were identified as Cardell Jones, 34, Natasha Henry, 43, and Stanley Herring Jr., 39.
The deadly shooting happened on Dec. 22, 2017, at a home in the 4300 block of Del Santos Drive in Las Vegas. Police responded to reports that multiple people had been shot and found all three victims dead inside the residence.
Authorities said the violence unfolded after Sanchez got into an argument with her roommates.
According to prosecutors, Jones was shot first multiple times. Herring was then shot next. Sanchez later reloaded the weapon and shot Henry in a bedroom, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, citing court filings.
During her sentencing, Sanchez told District Judge Tierra Jones that she feared for her life at the time of the killings.
“Your honor, due to the lifestyle I was living at the time and my interactions with the victims, I’d like you to know I was in fear for my life and the life of my loved ones,” Sanchez said, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“That may not be justified, that may not justify my actions, but as a single mother, it is what I felt was necessary at the time,” she added.
The victims’ families were left devastated.
Herring’s mother, June Griffin, told the court she does not believe anything will ever bring her closure.
“No matter how much money is spent, no matter what is said or what is done, it’s not going to give me closure,” Griffin said, according to the outlet. “It’s not going to bring my son back.”
The Las Vegas Sun reported that Sanchez had previously been indicted in 2015 in connection with the death of another Las Vegas woman who was found shot and stabbed in her apartment. That case was later dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Sanchez’s attorney could not be reached for comment.
