A Delaware cyclist died after police say a woman drove her Subaru into a bike lane, hit him and kept going until her SUV broke down.
Kara Gilmore, 46, is facing charges including second-degree vehicular homicide in the death of 52-year-old Duane Pershing, according to Delaware State Police.
She is also accused of leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, driving under the influence of alcohol and other traffic-related offenses.
The crash happened Tuesday around 9 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue in Millville, Delaware, about 4 miles from the Atlantic Coast.
Police said Pershing was riding west in the eastbound bike lane while Gilmore was driving east in a Subaru Forester on the same road.
According to investigators, Gilmore left the eastbound lane, entered the bike lane and struck Pershing.
Police said she continued driving after the crash.
A short time later, officers with the Ocean View Police Department found Gilmore’s SUV disabled in the parking lot of a nearby bank, authorities said.
When troopers contacted Gilmore, they said she showed multiple signs of impairment. She was given field sobriety tests and arrested for DUI.
Pershing was found at the crash scene with life-threatening injuries and was flown to a regional hospital. He died the next day.
After Gilmore’s initial arrest, she was released on a $3,404 unsecured bond.
After Pershing died, several of the charges against her were upgraded. Police said Gilmore, who is from Maryland, was later taken into custody there.
Delaware State Police said Thursday that the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact investigators.
