A Canadian teenager dressed head-to-toe in black randomly stabbed an elderly woman to death while she was raking leaves in her own front yard, according to reports.
The victim, 83-year-old Eleanor Doney, was attacked outside her home on Lynn Heights Drive in Pickering, Ontario, about 25 miles east of Toronto, on May 25 of last year.
The chilling attack was captured on video, according to the National Post.
The 14-year-old boy, whose name has not been released because he is protected under Canadian youth laws, was allegedly wearing a black mask, trench coat and gloves. He also had oversized dress shoes and was carrying a soft-shell briefcase.
According to the outlet, the teen walked past Doney before putting down the briefcase and speaking to her for about two minutes.
Moments later, he allegedly pulled a knife from the briefcase and stabbed Doney in the left side of her neck.
As Doney fell backward and tried to make it back inside her home, the teen repeatedly swung at her before running away, the report said.
A passerby later spotted Doney lying on the ground outside her home and tried to resuscitate her, but could not save her.
Doney was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, where further efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead around 4 p.m.
The teen later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in April, according to CBC.
Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira called Doney’s killing a “senseless murder” that devastated her family and shook the city of Pickering.
“The brutality and gratuitous nature of this crime—captured on video—is shocking, and it underscores the dangerous influence that online platforms can have on young people,” Moreira wrote on X in April.
Doney’s husband, Bruce Doney, gave a heartbreaking statement in court, saying he and his wife had been together for 63 years.
He said her death forced him to move into a long-term care home because Eleanor had been his main caregiver.
“With my many health problems which are age-related I am disabled and my wife was my supporter, my main caregiver,” he said, according to the National Post.
After the attack, police urged nearby residents to stay indoors while officers searched for the teen.
He was later identified by school administrators. Investigators also found a knife discarded in a wooded area, according to reports.
When police searched the teen’s home, they allegedly found that a knife was missing from a Cuisinart kitchen set. Authorities said the missing knife appeared to match the one recovered from the woods.
Investigators also uncovered disturbing online activity before the murder.
Police said the teen had watched 15 videos on May 20 and May 21 about how to tell whether someone is a psychopath or sociopath.
The next day, he allegedly searched “how serial killers got away” twice and watched a four-hour video about the “most sadistic serial killers” in history.
He also reportedly watched a video about how to apply maximum pressure when stabbing someone.
On the day Doney was killed, police said the teen searched train schedules for routes leaving Pickering. He was also on social media just four minutes before he stopped in front of Doney’s home.
After returning home, his browsing reportedly continued. Police said he watched Breaking Bad, Family Guy and Iron Man until officers arrested him.
The teen is expected to be sentenced in July.
The case has horrified the community, not only because of the brutality of the attack, but because Doney appeared to be a random victim doing an ordinary chore outside her own home.
