A Michigan man accused of shooting his 78-year-old grandmother and then beating her to death with a metal pry bar will remain behind bars without bond.

Zeff Nikollbibaj, 34, appeared by video from the Oakland County Jail on Thursday, July 2, for his arraignment in connection with the killing of his grandmother, Ana Nikollbibaj.

Judge Marla Parker entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and denied bond, according to CBS Detroit and Click on Detroit.

Nikollbibaj has been charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm. A conviction on the murder charge would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The firearm charge could add another two years to his sentence, to be served consecutively.

Prosecutors allege Nikollbibaj killed his grandmother on June 30 inside the Farmington Hills home where the two lived together.

Police found Ana unconscious on the floor of her bedroom with severe head injuries and multiple lacerations. A spent shell casing was reportedly discovered near her body.

Emergency medical workers treated her at the scene before rushing her to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

A bullet was recovered during her medical examination, according to Click on Detroit.

Nikollbibaj’s brother, who is also Ana’s grandson, was reportedly inside the house during the alleged attack but was not injured.

Farmington Hills police said Nikollbibaj barricaded himself inside a bedroom before officers were able to arrest him.

“Ana Nikollbibaj’s murder is especially shocking because the alleged killer is her grandson,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement.

“Sadly, this is a reminder that domestic violence takes many forms. While nothing we do will bring Ana back, we will work to hold her killer accountable.”

Nikollbibaj is scheduled to return to court on July 10 for a probable cause conference.
