A North Carolina woman has been accused of trying to kill her sleeping husband before allegedly planning to burn down their home and take her own life.
Deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home in Woodleaf at around 2:52 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, after emergency medical workers requested assistance.
When officers arrived, they found Jerry Marlowe being treated for a large cut to his neck that extended toward his shoulder, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Paula Marlowe, 58, allegedly told deputies that Jerry had awakened her after realizing he was bleeding and that she was preparing to take him to the hospital.
However, investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division later went to the couple’s home and uncovered a far more disturbing account, authorities said.
During questioning, Paula allegedly admitted that she attacked Jerry while he was asleep.
She also reportedly told investigators that she had planned to kill her husband, set the house on fire and then die by suicide because of financial problems.
Authorities believe Paula became frightened during the attack and ran from the bedroom before carrying out the rest of the alleged plan.
Jerry suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover following medical treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.
His family was notified about the attack and Paula’s alleged confession.
Paula has been charged with attempted first-degree murder. Authorities said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately provide further comment.
