At least three people were killed and several others were injured when a gunman opened fire outside a newly opened In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday afternoon.

Police rushed to the popular fast-food restaurant after receiving reports of gunfire at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 1.

At least three people died in the attack, Twin Falls public information coordinator Josh Palmer told NBC News.

Twin Falls County Commissioner Brent Reinke told the Associated Press that Sheriff Jack Johnson said five people were hurt. However, authorities cautioned that the exact number of victims had not yet been confirmed.

The suspected shooter was also found dead, according to Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks.

“We believe the threat to the community is over,” Hicks said during a news conference. “The suspected shooter in this incident is deceased.”

Police were still working to identify the suspected gunman and determine what may have motivated the deadly attack.

“We are working to try to ascertain his identity and the motivations behind that,” Hicks said.

Disturbing video captured by a driver across the street reportedly showed a person dressed in black walking toward a white vehicle outside the restaurant while carrying a long rifle.

The armed individual was then seen opening the vehicle’s trunk and reaching inside before the person recording the scene quickly drove away.

Police initially warned residents to stay away from the area as officers responded to what authorities described as an active-shooter situation. Nearby roads were closed, and people in the surrounding area were ordered to shelter in place.

The shelter-in-place order was later lifted after police announced that the suspected shooter was dead and there was no longer an active threat.

Roads surrounding the restaurant gradually reopened as investigators continued processing the sprawling scene.

The restaurant sits inside a busy shopping complex containing several major retailers, a movie theater and a mall. Hundreds of people may have witnessed some part of the attack or its aftermath.

Hicks said investigators expected to interview hundreds of potential witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting.

“Today has been a very hard day here in Twin Falls,” the police chief said.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little said he was closely following the situation as law enforcement officers and emergency crews responded.

“I am keeping the Twin Falls community in my prayers as law enforcement and first responders respond to an active shooter situation near In-N-Out,” Little said in a statement.

The FBI also sent agents to help with the investigation, although local law enforcement remained in charge of the case.

The shooting occurred just days after the Twin Falls In-N-Out opened on July 24, 2026. It was the California-based burger chain’s fourth location in Idaho.

In-N-Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick said the company was devastated by the violence.

“We are heartbroken,” Warnick said in a statement. “Our prayers go out to our Customers, our Associates, and all of their families.”

The company said it was cooperating with the Twin Falls Police Department as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened.

Authorities had not yet released the identities of the victims or the suspected shooter. Police also had not disclosed whether there was any known connection between the gunman and those who were killed or injured.
