A 15-year-old boy was arrested just minutes after police say he repeatedly stabbed a complete stranger outside a Whole Foods in California.
The shocking attack happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in South Lake Tahoe, where officers rushed to the grocery store after reports of a stabbing.
Police said they found a 42-year-old local man in the outdoor seating area suffering from multiple stab wounds. Witnesses were already trying to help him when officers arrived.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Authorities later said he was in stable condition.
Meanwhile, police learned that the suspected attacker had taken off on foot.
Officers quickly obtained a description and began searching the surrounding area.
Within about five minutes, police said they spotted and detained the suspect near the Ski Run area.
Authorities identified him as a 15-year-old boy from South Lake Tahoe.
Even more disturbing, investigators said the teenager and the victim apparently did not know each other.
Police described the stabbing as unprovoked.
The teen was booked into the El Dorado County Juvenile Treatment Center on an attempted murder charge and was being held without bail, according to authorities.
Police also credited witnesses at the scene with helping both the injured man and investigators.
Officials said bystanders provided critical information that helped officers quickly track down the suspect while others tended to the wounded victim.
South Lake Tahoe is located along California’s border with Nevada.
