A Texas father of three was shot and killed in front of his family after an argument during a recreational softball game escalated into a violent confrontation, leaving three other people injured.

Jarmon Mattix, 36, was killed Sunday night, October 18, in the parking lot of the Fall Creek Sports Complex in Humble, Texas, approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Houston.

The shooting unfolded after a dispute between two groups of people attending an adult softball game. Mattix’s family claims racial slurs were directed at him before the gunfire erupted, although investigators have not confirmed whether racial hostility played a role.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a disturbance and shots fired around 9:24 p.m. at the sports complex on Wyatt Shores Drive.

When officers arrived, they discovered four adults suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot.

Mattix was pronounced dead at the scene, while two women and another man were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.

His sister, Destiny Williams, identified the injured women as Mattix’s wife and mother, although investigators initially could not independently confirm their relationships to him.

Williams, who witnessed the confrontation, described the devastating moment her older brother was shot.

“He shot my brother right in front of me and my mother,” she told Houston television station KPRC.

She recalled seeing Mattix’s wife desperately trying to save him while emergency responders made their way to the scene.

“My sister-in-law was on top of him, trying to give him CPR,” Williams said.

The incident was particularly disturbing because children were among those attending the softball game when the confrontation broke out.

Investigators believe an argument began during the game before escalating into a physical altercation in the parking lot.

The exact cause of the original disagreement remains unclear.

However, Williams alleges that racial hostility contributed to the confrontation.

She told reporters that she heard a man involved in the dispute repeatedly directing racial slurs toward her brother before the shooting.

“My brother was targeted, and it’s just a devastating situation we’re in right now,” she said.

Williams urged investigators to examine the possibility that racial bias influenced the violence.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez acknowledged the family’s concerns but said investigators had not yet established a racial motive.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Gonzalez explained that the allegation had not been included in the initial briefing he received from detectives, but assured the public that investigators would examine the claim.

Authorities are also reviewing conflicting witness accounts of how the confrontation escalated.

One witness told FOX 26 Houston that both Mattix and another man displayed firearms during the dispute. Police have not publicly confirmed that account or determined who fired the shots.

Investigators recovered weapons at the scene and identified two people suspected of involvement in the shooting.

Both individuals were questioned by detectives, but no criminal charges had been publicly announced as of Monday evening.

Mattix’s family is now struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a husband, father and hardworking man who was deeply involved in his children’s lives.

A commercial truck driver, Mattix had reportedly received a promotion at work and was known for his dedication to supporting his family.

Williams described her older brother as an affectionate father and dependable family member who worked hard to provide for those he loved.

“He was an amazing father, an amazing brother,” she said.

Friends and local youth sports coaches also remembered Mattix as an active parent who regularly supported his children’s athletic activities.

One coach told FOX 26 that Mattix had previously coached his son’s Little League baseball team, helping the young players advance to an All-Star competition.

The tragedy has shaken the surrounding community, where families regularly gather for softball games, children’s sporting events and neighborhood activities.

Sheriff Gonzalez expressed condolences to the family while condemning the escalation of an ordinary disagreement into deadly violence.

“It’s heartbreaking when you see an evening of recreation and fellowship that ends up in violence,” Gonzalez said.

He urged people to seek help and de-escalate disputes before confrontations become dangerous, particularly in public places where children and other bystanders may be present.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit continues to investigate the shooting, including the actions of those involved and the family’s allegations of racial hostility.

Authorities have not announced whether the evidence supports potential hate-crime allegations or whether any of the individuals involved acted in self-defense.
