A woman and her four-year-old daughter are dead after an apparent shooting on the Florida Turnpike in Hollywood late Friday night.
On Saturday afternoon, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Beatrice Saintvil and the girl as her daughter.
Shortly after 11:50 p.m. Friday, Florida Highway Patrol was called out to a shooting on the northbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 49, just south of Hollywood Boulevard. According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting happened around 11:14 p.m. — about 35 minutes before the incident was reported.
When troopers arrived, they found Saintvil and her daughter with gunshot wounds inside a car parked in the left breakdown lane, BSO told CBS News Miami.
Hollywood Fire Rescue then responded to the scene and transported Saintvil to a local hospital, where she died. Unfortunately, her daughter was pronounced dead on the scene, BSO added.
At FHP’s request, BSO’s Homicide Unit was called out to the scene and is currently investigating the incident.
Anyley Cabrera was coming home from work when she came across the scene.
“Around that time, there’s never traffic like that,” she told CBS News Miami’s Steve Maugeri. “There’s never cars like that around.”
During the investigation, traffic along the Turnpike was congested for hours, Cabrera added.
“The car was destroyed… the shards in the window,” she said, describing what she saw while in traffic. “And the ambulance [was] there, so I guess they already took the people that were hurt.”
Lazaro Basq told Maugeri that the incident was unsettling because he takes care of his aunt in the neighborhood next to where the shooting happened along the Turnpike.
“It’s not supposed to happen,” he said.
“I don’t live here but now I’m concerned about it because I gotta come a little often,” Basq added.
