The tragic case of Ana Maria Henao Knezevich has taken another grim turn. Her husband, David Knezevich, who was awaiting trial for her murder, was found dead Monday morning inside the Federal Detention Center in Miami. Authorities say he died by suicide.

David Knezevich, 37, had been held at the detention center since May 6, 2024, facing charges of foreign domestic violence resulting in death and foreign murder of a U.S. national. His arrest followed the February 2024 disappearance of Ana, a Florida woman who had traveled to Spain in the middle of a bitter divorce. Ana had reportedly gone abroad to start a nonprofit aimed at helping women who had suffered abuse. She never returned, and her body has never been found.

Prison staff reportedly tried to administer life-saving measures after finding Knezevich unresponsive, but he was declared dead at the scene. His attorney, while confirming his death, expressed devastation and called for an appropriate and thorough investigation.

The loss of Knezevich before trial has left Ana’s family grappling with a flood of emotions. In a statement released through their attorney, they said, “The suicide of Ana’s murderer closes a painful chapter in our lives, previously filled with the dread that he might not face justice. Now, we may never know where he put Ana’s body.”

The family called his death “a cruel final insult,” lamenting that without a trial, they may never fully uncover the truth of what happened to Ana. They vowed to continue seeking answers and preserving Ana’s memory with “dignity, strength, and love.”

While the suicide spares Ana’s loved ones the pain of reliving her disappearance through a courtroom battle, it leaves them, and the public, with unresolved questions that may never be answered.

Ana, who was originally from Colombia, had hoped to make a difference for other victims of domestic abuse. Her family says they will continue to honor her legacy and keep fighting for justice in her name.
