A 74-year-old North Carolina woman is facing a murder charge after police say she falsely claimed she accidentally shot her husband during a 911 call.

Authorities in Union County say the investigation quickly took a darker turn after deputies arrived at the couple’s home in Monroe on May 8.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the woman — identified as Griffin — called 911 around 2:26 p.m. and told dispatchers she had accidentally shot her husband, Dennis Griffin, in the shoulder.

But when deputies and emergency crews arrived and began performing life-saving measures, investigators allegedly discovered something didn’t add up.

Authorities say Dennis Griffin had actually been shot in the chest, not the shoulder as his wife initially claimed.

Detectives later uncovered evidence suggesting the shooting may have been intentional.

According to investigators, the couple had allegedly been arguing about “past events” before the shooting happened.

Police claim Griffin then retrieved a .38-caliber handgun, pointed it at her husband, and pulled the trigger.

Authorities also allege that after the shooting, Griffin attempted to get rid of evidence before deputies arrived at the scene.

She was arrested and taken to the Union County Detention Center.

Griffin is now charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held without bond.

Officials have not said whether she has hired an attorney to represent her.

The investigation remains ongoing.
