A Louisiana town is reeling after a 16-year-old high school student was shot and killed during a house party earlier this week, turning what should have been a night of celebration into a tragedy.
The shooting happened just after midnight on Tuesday, May 20, in Lake Charles, near Central Parkway and Overhill Drive. Local authorities confirmed the incident involved a large crowd, mostly teens and young adults between 16 and 22, gathered for what neighbors said was a high school graduation party at a short-term rental.
The victim was later identified as McKenzie Rideau, a student at Lake Charles College Prep. The school publicly mourned her loss in a heartfelt social media post.
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our own,” wrote Principal Freddie L. Harrison III. “McKenzie was more than just a student, she was a light. Her smile, her energy, her kindness—she made everyone around her feel seen and accepted.”
McKenzie was known for her involvement in the school’s volleyball team and flag line, where she was remembered for her drive, talent, and infectious spirit. “She always encouraged others. She was uplifting, inclusive, and had an incredible way of making people feel like they belonged,” the statement read.
That sense of loss has extended far beyond the school walls. Neighbors reported hearing 30 to 50 gunshots ring out that night, with one local resident describing the noise as “sounding like fireworks under my carport” before the chaos of cars speeding off and people screaming.
Police say they’re actively working to identify those involved, with Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell confirming they have “people of interest” and are continuing their investigation. “We still have a lot of work left to do,” Caldwell said.
In the days following the shooting, the community came together to honor McKenzie. On May 23, friends, family, and classmates gathered for a balloon release in her memory. A GoFundMe has also been launched to support her grieving family, already raising over half of its $10,000 goal.
The fundraiser describes McKenzie as a “loving and outspoken” girl with big dreams. “She was smart, beautiful, and loved by so many,” the post reads. “She’s gained her wings where she’ll reunite with her little brother Prince.”
“Please keep our family in your prayers,” it continues. “We thank you all for the love and support—it does not go unnoticed. Justice4McKenzie.”
