A Missouri man is facing serious charges after allegedly opening fire during a road rage incident — all because another driver wouldn’t let him merge in heavy traffic.
Roy L. Anderson Jr., 53, was arrested last week and charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon after police say he fired a gun into the side of another car during a chaotic traffic jam in Kansas City.
The incident happened around 7 a.m. on Friday near East Interstate 70 and East US 40 Highway. Officers arrived to find Anderson calmly waiting for them — and holding a black 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun by the barrel, ready to turn it over.
According to court documents, Anderson claimed he thought he heard a gunshot and fired a warning shot into the air. But that story didn’t hold up for long. Police say he soon changed his story and said “the other guy definitely had a gun,” despite earlier admitting he hadn’t seen one.
The victim told police he was driving east on I-70 near a construction zone and was blocking cars from skipping ahead at the last second — something he said he does regularly. As traffic narrowed, the two drivers had a tense standoff. The victim said someone in Anderson’s car threw a soda can at him, so he tossed it back.
That’s when Anderson allegedly pulled out his gun, leaned back in his seat, and fired a round directly at the other car.
Police recovered a bullet hole in the front passenger door of the victim’s car, along with a spent casing inside Anderson’s Lexus. The victim also described the gun in detail, which matched the weapon recovered at the scene.
Anderson was booked at the Jackson County Detention Center and released on Saturday after posting 10 percent of his $75,000 bond. A judge ordered him to stay away from the victim and any witnesses, and barred him from possessing or being near any firearms.
He’s due back in court on June 11.
