A quiet Sunday morning in Miami turned tragic when 17-year-old Dominic Ferrell was fatally stabbed in his sleep inside a luxury high-rise apartment overlooking Biscayne Bay—and the attacker, police say, was a total stranger who slipped into the building unnoticed.
Ferrell, a student at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, was found with multiple stab wounds in his 34th-floor unit at the Icon Brickell building. Police say the suspect, 26-year-old Kyrill R. Kehl, managed to bypass security by tailgating a group of residents through the building’s key-fob-protected entrance.
According to authorities, Kehl entered Ferrell’s apartment through an unlocked door while the teen was sleeping. A roommate discovered Ferrell’s body and called 911.
“It’s disheartening to see this 17-year-old… killed by a perfect stranger,” Miami Police spokesperson Michael Vega told NBC Miami.
Surveillance footage shows Kehl fleeing the scene and running into a nearby construction site. Hours later, police found his body at that site—dead from a fall. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the fall was accidental or a suicide.
Officials say there was no known link between Kehl and Ferrell. Kehl had reportedly arrived in Miami from Arizona just days earlier and had a documented history of mental illness, according to CBS News Miami and WPLG.
