Ex-Officer Sentenced After Drunk Driving Crash Kills Entire Family

A former Los Angeles police officer who caused a horrific DUI crash that killed an entire family has finally been sentenced—more than seven years after the deadly incident.

Edgar Verduzco, 34, was off-duty in 2017 when he slammed into two vehicles while speeding at a staggering 150 miles per hour on the 605 Freeway. One of the cars burst into flames, killing Mario Davila, 60, his wife Maribel Davila, 52, and their 19-year-old son Oscar on the spot.

Verduzco had been drinking before the crash. On April 11 of this year, he pleaded guilty to three counts of murder, along with two DUI-related charges. On Friday, July 18, he was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years to life, plus an additional three-year term for the DUI injury charge.

According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the second vehicle he hit was carrying a mother and her baby, who thankfully escaped with only minor injuries.

“Mr. Verduzco knew the risks of driving under the influence, but his decision was fueled by recklessness and careless disregard for others,” said L.A. District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “The law applies equally to all – especially to those who are supposed to enforce it.”

Hochman went on to call the tragedy a devastating reminder that drunk driving is never an accident—it’s a deliberate choice with irreversible consequences.

Oscar Davila was a 19-year-old student at UC Riverside, full of promise and a bright future. Now, his four surviving siblings are left to grieve the unimaginable loss of their entire immediate family.

“My support and sympathy go out to the Davila family’s loved ones,” Hochman said.

It’s a case that highlights a painful truth: no one is above the law—and one reckless decision can destroy multiple lives in seconds.
