A heartbreaking tragedy is unfolding in Chicago after a woman was taken into custody for allegedly drowning a baby boy in Lake Michigan.
Authorities say the 31-year-old woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was found in the water near South Shore Beach around 9:45 p.m. on Friday, July 18. Police believe she intentionally drowned a 1-year-old child before being located in the lake herself.
The Chicago Fire Department’s Marine Unit later recovered the boy’s body. He was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The woman was transported to a hospital following her rescue. While the motive remains unknown, law enforcement sources told WGN-TV that the child and the woman were related. Officials have not yet disclosed the child’s identity or confirmed specific charges, but the case has been classified as a homicide.
“The more I heard, the more tragic it got, the sadder it got,” said Street Pastor Donovan Price, who visited the hospital after learning of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have yet to issue a public statement detailing what led up to the alleged drowning. As of Sunday, the Chicago Police Department had not responded to requests for comment.
This devastating incident has shaken the local community, as many await answers about how and why such a tragedy could have occurred.
