A devastating car crash that killed five young women celebrating a birthday in Texas has taken a new turn, as authorities have arrested the man they say is responsible.

Kody Lane Talley, 37, was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 5—nearly two weeks after the deadly collision that claimed the lives of five close friends in their early 20s. The crash occurred on July 25 around 6 p.m. on U.S. 281 in Burnet County, just north of Austin, when Talley’s pickup truck, which was hauling a livestock trailer, allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic.

According to multiple outlets including CBS News Texas and KVUE, Talley’s 2018 Ram pickup first struck a Chevy Malibu, then slammed head-on into a Mercedes SUV carrying the group of women. The SUV overturned and burst into flames. All five women inside were killed.

Authorities identified the victims as Thalia Salinas, Ruby Cruz, Brianna Valadez, Desiree Cervantez, and Jacqueline Velazco Ventura. The women, who had been best friends since middle school, were on a weekend road trip to Kingsland, Texas, to celebrate Salinas’ 23rd birthday.

Talley, a resident of Leander, Texas, now faces five counts of manslaughter. He is currently being held in Burnet County Jail. As of now, it’s unclear whether he has obtained legal representation or entered a plea.

In a statement shared with CBS News, Salinas’ family wrote, “We were en route to celebrate Thalia’s birthday in Kingsland, Texas, at her favorite place — on the lake — with all her favorite people. Then we got news of the girls’ passing away in the worst accident we could ever imagine. We will never recover from losing Thalia, Brianna, Ruby, Jackie, and Desi.”

The heartbreak has spread far beyond the families, as tributes and memorials continue to pour in. Alongside the crash site, five custom heart-shaped signs now bear the names of each young woman—marking the spot where their lives were tragically cut short.

GoFundMe pages have been launched to support the victims’ families, many of whom have shared memories and heartbreak through the campaign updates. Thalia’s family described her as “witty, intelligent, loyal,” and “the true manager of our household.” She had recently become an aunt and was considered the glue of her family.

Valadez, who was preparing to start nursing school, was remembered by her family as someone who lived life brightly and fearlessly. “We will carry Bri’s light with us always,” they wrote.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet said what caused Talley to veer into oncoming traffic, and further details about possible impairment or distraction have not been made public.
