A Memphis man is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting his wife during a heated argument — then making a bizarre pit stop for beer on the way to take her to the hospital.
Authorities say 51-year-old Decarlo Pitchford is charged with attempted second-degree murder, domestic assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and theft. The incident unfolded on July 19 at the couple’s home in the West Junction neighborhood of southwest Memphis.
Prosecutors allege the fight began as a shouting match, but when the woman tried to leave, Pitchford blocked her path. According to investigators, he pulled out a 9mm Ruger and fired, hitting her in the abdomen. “I told you to stop playing with me,” he allegedly told her after pulling the trigger.
Instead of rushing her straight to the hospital, police say Pitchford stopped to buy a beer along the way.
Officers first responded to the couple’s home after reports of a shooting but found it empty. They later learned the victim had been dropped off at Methodist University Hospital. In her statement to police, she said the shooting was intentional — despite Pitchford’s claim it was an accident while he was clearing a jammed gun.
Pitchford, who has a prior felony record, allegedly admitted to having the weapon. Prosecutors highlighted the case this week as their “Case of the Day,” calling attention to the shocking details.
