An Oregon teen is behind bars after police say he brutally attacked an 82-year-old woman on a popular walking trail, leaving her unconscious with serious injuries.

Marcellus Ford, 18, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Washington County Jail on a charge of second-degree assault. Court records show he appeared virtually before a judge on Wednesday, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.

According to the Tigard Police Department, the assault happened around 6:45 p.m. Sunday on the Fanno Creek Trail. The elderly victim was walking when a younger man began following her before suddenly launching into a violent attack.

Police say the suspect ran off, leaving the woman unconscious on the trail. Luckily, two cyclists found her quickly and called 911. She was rushed to a hospital, where she remained as of Tuesday’s last update from authorities. Investigators believe the assault was a random act.

Detectives soon obtained a photo of the suspect taken outside the Tigard Public Library, located near the trail. After releasing the image to the public, tips led them to Ford, a Tigard resident. “We’d like to thank our partners in the community for their help in quickly identifying him,” police said in a statement.

Residents told Portland’s KGW that violent crime is rare on the trail, which is part of the Portland metro area about 10 miles southwest of the city. “I walk it every day, five days a week, and I never have really had a problem,” one local said. Another called the path “super safe” and encouraged people to keep using it, noting that the more it’s frequented, the safer it becomes.

  1. Death penalty or the attacker. Anyone who does this senseless act to a senior is of no use to society and should be put down like a rabid dog!

    1. A family member needs to be waiting for this vermin to be released. Then apply the proper insecticide.

  2. Was the 82 year woman a woke liberal???
If so, she would probably want a GoFundMe account set up for this deprived young man.
