A shocking crime has left a New Mexico community in disbelief after police say an 18-year-old ordered an Uber ride with the sole purpose of killing the driver to “relieve his stress.”
According to court documents, Sheliky Sanchez confessed to shooting 52-year-old Uber driver Joseph Andrus multiple times on August 7, telling investigators he needed to “let off some steam.” Police allege Sanchez had his girlfriend order the ride, cycled through several drivers, and ultimately chose Andrus because he “seemed like a good guy” — adding disturbingly that he doesn’t “really go for good people.”
Sanchez reportedly had a pleasant conversation with Andrus, calling him “a really cool guy,” before ordering him out of the car and opening fire. He allegedly fled in the vehicle, which was later found outside his girlfriend’s home.
Friends and family are remembering Andrus for his kindness, bravery, and perseverance. His mother shared that he had just achieved his long-time goal of graduating from college last month. His partner, Oli Rogers, urged others to honor Andrus’s memory by doing “one nice thing for a stranger every day.”
Sanchez has been charged with murder, armed robbery, and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors are seeking to keep him in custody as he awaits trial.
