Family Dog Kills 8-Year-Old Boy in Horrific Attack

A Virginia community is mourning the loss of an 8-year-old boy who died after being attacked by a dog at a home in Danville on Tuesday, August 26.

According to the Danville Police Department, officers were called to the residence just after 8 p.m. and discovered the child unresponsive with “apparent signs of trauma to his neck consistent with an animal bite.” Despite life-saving efforts, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the boy had been under the care of his teenage sister at the time of the attack. Family members told police the 4-year-old dog involved in the incident had “not previously been known to be aggressive.”

Following the tragedy, the dog was taken to the Danville Area Humane Society, where it will be observed for 10 days to check for rabies before being euthanized. Police have not disclosed the breed of the dog.

Paulette Dean, the executive director of the Danville Area Humane Society, explained the decision not to rehabilitate the animal. “We will not put the dog up for adoption, nor will we transfer him to any group or sanctuary for rehabilitation. We will euthanize him,” Dean told WSET. “This will anger some people. But the dog killed a child. A helpless child.”

Dean added that the tragedy has left lasting scars on everyone involved. “His family and friends, as well as the police department and other first responders, will bear emotional scars from what they saw,” she said. “It is a tragedy from first sentence to last sentence.”

In the wake of the incident, the Danville Police Department is offering counseling services to the neighborhood through their “heart walks,” aimed at helping residents process traumatic events.

Neighbors expressed heartbreak over the loss. “It made me feel sad and hurt,” said Tenita Younger. Another neighbor, Kenyetta Atkins, added, “I ain’t like it. That’s too sad how the little boy died like that.”
