A Michigan family practice doctor has been arrested after allegedly trying to arrange a sexual relationship with who he believed was a 5-year-old girl, according to police.
Authorities say 45-year-old Dr. William J. Murdoch was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service following a disturbing undercover child exploitation investigation led by the Port St. Lucie Police Department in Florida.
According to investigators, the sting began in June 2025 when Murdoch started chatting online with someone he believed was a mother. Police say Murdoch expressed interest in forming a “platonic relationship” with her as a way to see if she would allow her young daughter to be “courted” and eventually have a sexual relationship with him.
Authorities allege Murdoch sent “stomach-churning” messages outlining his intentions and grooming tactics. Police also said they uncovered disturbing details in Murdoch’s iCloud account, including “explicit” information suggesting he used his medical training to assist in “dark web hunts” and discussed topics such as “conception, full-term abortions, and intentional drug and alcohol use to cause birth defects.”
Murdoch is set to be extradited to Florida, where he faces charges of “soliciting a parent to consent to the participation of sexual conduct involving a child.” He is currently being held without bond at the Monroe County Jail in Michigan. It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
ProMedica, the healthcare company where Murdoch worked, released a statement confirming that his arrest led to “an immediate suspension of Dr. Murdoch’s hospital privileges and a termination of all activity involving the physician.”
“Our priority is the safety and care of our patients and their families,” a spokesperson said, adding that the company is cooperating fully with investigators.
This is a developing story.
