A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken a southern Utah community after a 3-year-old boy was found dead inside a sweltering car outside his family’s home.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the devastating discovery happened on Monday, Sept. 1, around 6:11 p.m., in the small town of Veyo. Deputies were dispatched after receiving a frantic 911 call filled with screaming that dispatchers couldn’t understand.
When deputies arrived, they found the toddler unresponsive inside a parked car as temperatures soared into the 90s. Paramedics desperately tried to save him, but despite their efforts, the little boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the child was left in the car after returning home from a shopping trip with his family. It’s still unclear how long he had been inside the vehicle.
Authorities have not said whether any charges will be filed as the investigation continues.
“The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is saddened that this tragic incident occurred and extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community this has affected,” officials said in a statement.
