The family of eight-year-old Rhys Anthony Cameron, whose tragic death has rocked the town of Billingham in northeast England, say they are “utterly devastated” as they mourn the boy’s loss.
“Rhys was a lovely little son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend to many who loved and knew him in the community,” the family said in a statement to local media. “He had a cheery, funny and beautiful personality and carried a huge smile wherever he went that will forever be remembered. His love for listening to music, playing with his friends, and even his fascination with toothbrushes brought joy to us all.”
Rhys was found unresponsive at a home on Marsh House Avenue earlier this month. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but the little boy could not be saved. Cleveland Police later charged 40-year-old Louise Cameron with his murder. She is being held in custody and is set to face a plea hearing in November, with a trial scheduled for February. Authorities have not clarified her relationship, if any, to Rhys.
The boy’s school, Ash Trees Academy, also shared a heartbreaking tribute. “We are devastated by the loss,” headteacher Lauren Banks said. “His smile lit up the room and he was a true pleasure to have as part of our school family.”
An inquest into Rhys’s death opened on September 23, but the coroner said the case remains “unexplained” until criminal proceedings are complete.
For now, Rhys’s loved ones say they are clinging to the support from their community as they struggle to process the unimaginable. “To say we as a family are devastated is an understatement,” they said. “We take comfort from the words of support we have received, and the love shown to Rhys as we continue to take time to come to terms with our tragic loss.”
