A Minnesota jury has convicted an Iowa woman in the brutal killing of her ex-partner, whose body was discovered in the back seat of a car after a shocking crash.
On Monday, 33-year-old Margot Lewis was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder in the 2024 stabbing death of 35-year-old Liara Tsai, a well-known Minneapolis DJ, according to MPR News.
The case first came to light on June 22, 2024, when Lewis crashed Tsai’s car on Interstate 90 in Eyota, Minnesota. When good Samaritans stopped to help, they were horrified to find Lewis sitting in a lawn chair in the median—and Tsai’s body wrapped in bedding, a mattress, and a tarp in the back seat, per the criminal complaint.
Police later searched Tsai’s Minneapolis apartment and found evidence of a violent scene. Prosecutors said Lewis had stabbed Tsai in her bed, leaving her to bleed to death.
Friends described Tsai as a rising star in the local music scene and a dedicated suicide hotline volunteer. “She was just such a magnetic personality,” said friend Jaycee Cooper. “She was one of those people that made you feel welcome and seen.”
Lewis pleaded not guilty and was held on $1 million bail during her trial. Jurors also found aggravating factors, meaning her sentencing could exceed the standard guidelines. She is scheduled to be sentenced on November 18.
In addition to her murder conviction, Lewis still faces a separate charge of concealing a dead body in Olmsted County.
