A South Carolina teaching assistant has landed in jail after allegedly turning his high school into a stink bomb zone with repeated blasts of fart spray.
Deputies say 32-year-old Alexander Lewis sprayed the foul-smelling chemical multiple times inside West Florence High School between late August and mid-September, filling the halls with a stench so strong it left students sick and coughing.
According to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, several kids needed medical attention for respiratory issues, and the school ended up shelling out more than $55,000 to inspect and repair its air conditioning system, which had been contaminated by the prank.
Lewis was arrested on September 20 and charged with disturbing schools and malicious injury to property valued at over $10,000. He’s currently being held at the Florence County Detention Center on just over $1,000 bond.
Students told local news outlets the stench was unbearable. “Every time I go to my second block class, I walk up the stairwell and immediately, teachers are covering their noses and their mouths, coughing because of the smell,” one teen said. “I got physically sick the other day because of the smell. I feel like I’m going to pass out because I get so lightheaded and so dizzy.”
Parents also complained their kids had to stay home from school. One mother told ABC 15, “My son says it’s been about three days now and it’s causing him to have headaches. It’s concerning, especially when it’s affecting my child’s health.”
Investigators say Lewis bought the spray online and deliberately set it off on multiple occasions. Authorities haven’t ruled out more charges as the investigation continues.
