A California mother of five has been arrested after the tragic death of her 2-year-old son during bath time at their home.
Police in Placentia said they received a 911 call on the night of September 22 about an unresponsive child. When officers and paramedics arrived, they found the boy in the bathroom and immediately began life-saving efforts. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities identified the boy’s mother as 40-year-old Melissa Lynn Beisel. According to investigators, Beisel had been bathing her son in a plastic storage bin inside a walk-in shower. She allegedly left the toddler alone for about two minutes to grab soap, and when she returned, she found him face-down and unresponsive.
Police say Beisel attempted CPR, but when it didn’t work, she injured herself with a sharp object. She then reportedly stayed in the bathroom with her child’s body for six hours until a relative discovered them and called for help.
Beisel was treated for what officials described as non-life-threatening self-inflicted wounds before being booked into jail. She now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse causing great bodily injury.
While investigators say they don’t believe Beisel intended to drown her son, they allege her decision to leave him unattended in the bath—and her failure to seek help right away—was negligent.
Neighbors told The Orange County Register that the family appeared to be “loving” and “normal,” though one neighbor recalled Child Protective Services had previously been looking for Beisel months earlier.
Beisel lived in the home with her partner and five children. Her youngest son, now deceased, was the baby of the family, while her other children range from elementary school to their mid-teens.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Placentia Police Department or leave an anonymous tip with Orange County Crime Stoppers.
