An Ohio couple is behind bars after police say three children in their care were found starving and severely abused, including a 9-year-old boy who weighed only 30 pounds.

Authorities say first responders rushed to the Elmwood Place home on September 13 after Aaron Stalling called 911, telling dispatchers that the boy was struggling to breathe and unresponsive. When medics arrived, they managed to resuscitate the child, but what they found shocked even seasoned investigators: all three siblings, ages 9, 8, and 6, appeared malnourished and required immediate hospitalization.

“This appears to be one of the most insidious examples of child abuse that I’ve seen in 25 years,” a Hamilton County prosecutor said during a court hearing, according to WLWT.

The children’s grandfather, Ronald Sanders, told WXIX the situation was devastating. “I have seen a picture of him and it was literally the most horrific, disturbing thing I have ever seen in my life,” he said. Speaking about his daughter, Angel Holland, and her boyfriend, Stalling, he added, “I just can’t understand how somebody can be so evil and you’re family. If you didn’t want them, give them to somebody else.”

Court records show Holland and Stalling have both been charged with three counts of child endangerment and three counts of felony abuse. Jail records confirm each is being held on $600,000 bond as they await trial.

According to dispatch recordings cited by WCSC, Stalling described the boy’s condition as “really weak” and admitted the child hadn’t been speaking or responding before he called for help.
