A Massachusetts dinner trip turned into a nightmare for a 75-year-old woman after prosecutors say a man posing as a valet kidnapped her and drove her across state lines.
Michael J. Guerrero, 36, is facing charges of carjacking, kidnapping, indecent assault, and more, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. He pleaded not guilty on Monday and is being held without bail until a dangerousness hearing scheduled for October 6.
The frightening ordeal began on September 14 when the woman returned to a 99 Restaurant in Pembroke around 9:15 p.m. to look for her missing wallet and cell phone. When she found the front door locked, a man claiming to be a valet driver offered to help. He told her he could take her around to a back entrance that was supposedly open.
Instead, prosecutors say Guerrero climbed into her car, took the driver’s seat, and sped off with the woman inside. As he drove onto the highway, he allegedly told her he wanted her to perform sexual acts and threatened that he had a gun if she didn’t obey.
The 75-year-old bravely tried to escape when the car stopped at an intersection in what she believed was Providence or Johnston, Rhode Island. Guerrero then shut off the engine, tossed the keys, and fled the scene, prosecutors said.
The woman made it back to Massachusetts the next day and reported the terrifying incident to Pembroke police. Officers quickly posted surveillance photos of the suspect online, urging the public to help identify him.
“It appears the person approached multiple vehicles and may have been asking for a ride to Providence, RI,” police wrote at the time. Within hours, tips began pouring in from local restaurants where the suspect had been spotted that night. Investigators later discovered Guerrero had also used a ride-share app to move around.
Police arrested Guerrero in Providence on September 24. He was extradited to Massachusetts the next day to face charges.
The case has rattled the Pembroke community, with prosecutors describing the ordeal as a violent, terrifying attack on an unsuspecting elderly woman who thought she was simply getting help.
