At least six people, including minors, were rushed to the hospital after a chaotic late-night shooting in a busy shopping and restaurant district in central Gävle, Sweden.
Police say the gunfire erupted just before 2 a.m. Saturday, October 4, on a street packed with weekend crowds. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as people ran for cover while shots rang out.
Authorities confirmed that six people were struck by bullets, though none suffered life-threatening injuries. “Among the injured are minors,” police spokesperson Tobias Ahlén-Svalbro told reporters.
According to local outlet Dagens Nyheter, several people fled into nearby pubs and shops to hide. Restaurant owner Shariar Rad said his staff helped care for the wounded inside his establishment until paramedics arrived. “It felt almost chaotic,” he said. “Our guard had let two or three injured people in who were being bandaged up inside. It was nice to see that we could take care of the injured before the ambulances came.”
Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the shooting, which is being investigated as attempted murder. Authorities have not yet determined a motive.
As of Saturday morning, the area remained blocked off as investigators combed the scene for evidence. Officials urged anyone with information to come forward.
Sweden’s Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer condemned the attack as “extreme recklessness” in a statement. “If it is true that the person holding the weapon is a child under 15 years old, it is another nightmare example of how violence has sunk further down in the ages,” he said, calling the incident a sign of a growing youth crime crisis in the country.
Strömmer added that police are “doing everything they can” to bring those responsible to justice while the Ministry of Justice continues to monitor the investigation.
