New details are surfacing in the brutal killing of a retired Auburn University professor who was attacked while walking her dogs in a popular Alabama park.
Dr. Julie Schnuelle, a respected veterinarian and beloved member of the Auburn community, was found stabbed to death at Kiesel Park on the morning of September 6. According to court testimony, she was stabbed seven times and dragged roughly 25 to 30 yards off the walking trail. Police say her phone, visor, and a blood-soaked dog leash were found scattered nearby.
Authorities have charged 32-year-old Harold Rashad Dabney III of Montgomery with capital murder in connection with the attack. Investigators allege Dabney ambushed Schnuelle shortly after she arrived at the park around 9:38 a.m., then left her body in a wooded area before stealing her F-150 truck and fleeing.
A witness discovered Schnuelle’s body later that day and called 911. At a preliminary hearing this week, an Auburn detective described the gruesome scene: multiple pools of blood along the trail, Schnuelle’s body hidden behind a tree, and evidence suggesting she had been dragged off the path. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Dabney using Schnuelle’s key fob to get into her truck and drive away.
The next morning, authorities say Dabney was found outside a church about four miles from the park. When officers searched him, they allegedly discovered one of Schnuelle’s credit cards hidden in his underwear. Her truck was later located abandoned in the woods nearby.
Police say blood was found inside the vehicle along with Dabney’s fingerprints. He has been charged with two counts of capital murder and is currently being held without bond.
Dr. Schnuelle was a longtime professor in Auburn’s Department of Clinical Sciences before retiring in 2021. Friends and former students described her as kind, spunky, and a familiar face at Kiesel Park, where she often walked her dogs.
“She ran there every day,” said former student Dr. Ashley Rutter.
Dabney’s case has been sent to a local grand jury.
