A New Mexico man has been accused of shooting his own mother multiple times after a late-night argument in which she allegedly told him he was “acting crazy,” authorities said.
Kevin Marin, 20, is facing charges of aggravated battery against a family member and attempted second-degree murder, according to Doña Ana County court records.
The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of Monday at a home near Santa Teresa Elementary School in Santa Teresa, New Mexico — a community just northwest of El Paso near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Marin’s brother told investigators he heard Kevin yelling late into the night and told him to go to bed. Their mother also reportedly urged him to calm down, telling him he was “acting crazy,” according to local station KFOX.
She then walked Marin to his bedroom and stayed with him. But hours later, around 3 a.m., gunfire rang out inside the house.
When the brother rushed to the scene, he found their mother bleeding. She had been shot 11 times, according to a court document cited by KFOX. He quickly drove her to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
Investigators later recovered several shell casings from what they believe was a semi-automatic rifle or carbine.
Another woman at the home told KTSM that after the victim was taken to the hospital, she returned to find Marin calmly sitting on the couch. He was arrested soon after and taken into custody.
Court records from El Paso County, Texas, also show Marin was indicted on aggravated assault charges earlier this year.
The victim remains hospitalized as the investigation continues.
