A 37-year-old woman in Queensland, Australia, has been charged with murder and arson following a devastating house fire that claimed the lives of two young boys and a woman, police confirmed.
Emergency services were called to a property on Whiting Street in the Gladstone suburb of Toolooa just before 6 a.m. local time on October 15. By the time firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Three people were found deceased inside.
The victims have been identified as 36-year-old Jordana Johnson, her 13-year-old son Jordan Norris, and 12-year-old Chazz Mather, who was visiting for a sleepover. The suspected perpetrator, 37-year-old Contessa Leigh Marie Richardson, sustained injuries while escaping the fire and faced a brief bedside hearing at the hospital. She is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 24.
Police confirmed Richardson faces three counts of murder and two counts of arson. Acting Detective Inspector Brett Richard said that while fires often leave little evidence, there is enough to move forward with legal proceedings. He did not comment on a possible motive or the circumstances of the victims inside the home.
Fire crews battled the blaze for nearly two hours, with the search for the victims complicated when the top story of the house collapsed.
The tragedy has shaken the local community. A GoFundMe page honoring the victims described them as “three beautiful souls” and highlighted their warmth and playful spirits. Donations from the fundraiser will help Jordana’s two daughters and Chazz’s mother and seven siblings rebuild their lives after losing loved ones and their home.
On October 25, more than 1,000 people gathered at Barney Point Beach, a traditional healing site for the Gooreng Gooreng people, to honor the victims with ceremonial dances, water blessings, and a smoking ceremony.
As of October 27, the GoFundMe page had raised over $22,000, reflecting the outpouring of support from the wider community.
The tragedy in Gladstone is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of such loss on families and communities.
