A college student’s life was tragically cut short after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver while jogging in Kansas. Elsa McGrain, 20, was jogging near the Lawrence Regional Airport Thursday evening when the fatal accident occurred. Her body wasn’t discovered until nearly 10 hours later, authorities said.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, McGrain was hit around 6 p.m., and a passerby found her at 3:35 a.m. Friday, calling police immediately. After investigating the scene, officials confirmed she had died at the location while out for her run.
Authorities later tracked down the vehicle, reportedly an all-white pickup truck, and arrested the driver suspected of the hit-and-run. William Ray Klingler, 36, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and failure to appear. Records show he is being held without bond.
McGrain, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, was a pre-med student at the University of Kansas, set to graduate in 2026. She was also an active member of the Chi Omega sorority, serving as house manager on the executive board. Her sorority sisters shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, remembering her as a “genuine, kind, and full of light” friend who always made those around her feel valued.
Authorities released images of the vehicle involved and thanked the community for providing tips that helped lead to Klingler’s arrest. The sheriff’s office also expressed gratitude to other law enforcement agencies for their assistance.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Elsa McGrain’s family and friends during this incredibly tragic time,” police said, urging the community to continue supporting them.
