A Nevada teen is facing murder charges after allegedly causing a horrific 12-car crash that killed his pregnant girlfriend and another driver.

Jose Gutierrez, 19, was driving at 100 mph through a 45 mph zone in Las Vegas on Nov. 18 when he slammed into a line of cars waiting at a red light, Clarke County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said. Gutierrez was reportedly not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, and evidence suggests he made no attempt to brake before the collision.

“We believe based on all of the evidence to date — including a very descriptive video — that his actions were intentional, which gives rise to a charge of murder,” Wolfson said.

Gutierrez was behind the wheel of a silver 2011 Infiniti G37 carrying his girlfriend, Adilene Duran Rincon, 20, who was pregnant, when the crash occurred at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and North Jones Boulevard. Rincon and 38-year-old driver Edward Garcia died at the scene. A third victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Police later found a marijuana vape on Gutierrez and noted that his eyes appeared bloodshot during the arrest, but the district attorney confirmed he was not impaired during the deadly crash.

Following the investigation, prosecutors upgraded the charges against Gutierrez from reckless driving resulting in death to murder, attempted murder, and battery with use of a deadly weapon.

The car he was driving was registered to Rincon’s mother. Authorities also noted that this was not Gutierrez’s first incident: in September, he was involved in a crash with an elderly woman after running a stop sign, and last month he received a speeding ticket for going 52 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Earlier this year, police also arrested Gutierrez after he allegedly threatened a public officer during a separate incident, reportedly telling the officer, “I’ll f—king shoot you” and “I’ll kill you.”

Gutierrez is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 6 for his arraignment.
