Two married Denver sheriff’s deputies have been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault on a man in a wheelchair while off duty.

Jason Gentempo, 44, and Carla Gentempo, 43, were taken into custody last week and face a class 6 felony charge of third-degree assault of an at-risk adult. The alleged victim’s name and the location of the incident are redacted in the arrest report, but authorities say the assault occurred on October 17.

According to the report, the man in a wheelchair told investigators he was outside his apartment with his dog when one of the deputies told him to put the dog inside. He later identified Jason and Carla Gentempo in a photo lineup. While details are heavily redacted, the report states that Carla allegedly punched the man in the face and kicked him in the chest, causing him to fall out of his wheelchair and hit his head on the pavement. Jason reportedly struck the man as he fell and is alleged to have kicked and stomped on the victim’s phone, according to security camera footage cited in the report.

After the alleged assault, the couple allegedly ran to a white truck they had left running nearby and drove away.

Both deputies were booked into the Downtown Denver Detention Center and later released on personal recognizance bonds. Court records show that Jason does not currently have an attorney listed, while Carla’s attorney has been contacted for comment.

Jason Gentempo has been a deputy since 2005 and is assigned to the Downtown Denver Detention Center. Carla Gentempo, a sergeant, has served since 2010 and is assigned to the Denver Sheriff Department’s Administration Division. Both are now on investigatory leave and are scheduled to appear in court on December 29.

If convicted, the pair would lose their law enforcement certifications and be barred from serving as officers in Colorado.
