Three young adults in Austin, Texas, are facing serious charges after police say they left an 11-month-old baby alone in a car for hours on a cold night so they could go bar-hopping.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KXAN, Gabrielle Aleman, 22, Jaslyn Tovar, 21, and Isaiah Calvo, 25, have been charged with child abandonment. Investigators say the baby was left unattended in a vehicle while temperatures hovered around 36 degrees Fahrenheit.
The situation came to light after Austin police officers encountered the trio downtown late at night while they were out drinking. Officers initially noticed them violating pedestrian traffic laws. When police attempted to stop them, Aleman and Calvo reportedly continued walking away despite repeated commands to stop.
An officer eventually caught up with the pair and informed them they were being detained. Calvo complied, but Aleman allegedly tried to walk away again before another officer intervened. Tovar was later arrested for interference with public duties and was additionally charged with resisting arrest after she refused to comply. Aleman was also charged with resisting arrest, with officers noting it was difficult to detain her.
All three were taken to the Travis County Jail without telling officers about anything else of concern, according to the affidavit.
About an hour later, police received a call from Aleman’s aunt, who told them her niece had been arrested after leaving her infant alone in a car in downtown Austin. Officers immediately began searching for the vehicle while the suspects remained in custody.
Police eventually located the car and broke a window to rescue the baby. Austin-Travis County EMS evaluated the child at the scene and found no obvious injuries, determining the baby did not need to be transported to a hospital. Even so, authorities said the vehicle was not a safe environment for an infant, especially given the cold temperature.
During questioning, investigators learned the group allegedly planned to monitor the baby remotely using FaceTime while they were inside bars. The affidavit states the baby was not dressed in appropriate winter clothing and was pinned beneath an improperly secured car seat. Police also noted the vehicle had been parked in an area described as a well-documented, high-crime location.
It is unclear whether the three suspects have legal representation or have entered pleas. Authorities have not released additional details about potential further charges, and the Austin Police Department has not commented publicly on the case.
